The Carbon – Piemonte The Living Lab Carbon – Piedmont was established to address the needs of agricultural enterprises within the Agritech network, which have highlighted the necessity of enhancing both environmental and economic sustainability in milk production.
To this end, a collaborative initiative involving the University of Turin, the Regional Association of Livestock Breeders of Piedmont (ARAP), and five livestock farms has launched an experimental program aimed at improving input efficiency to strengthen the environmental and economic sustainability of farming operations.
In each participating farm, a forage system was designed to maximize the self-production of protein- and energy-rich feed for herd nutrition, thereby reducing reliance on market-purchased raw materials. Environmental monitoring was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented practices using the following parameters: assessment of the carbon footprint of milk production, farm-level nutrient balance (e.g., nitrogen), and measurement of both on-farm and off-farm land used for milk production.
